A somber gathering of several hundred people convened to pay their respects to Ann Delaney, a 47-year-old mother and nurse who tragically passed away while sleeping rough in Dublin city center. Ms. Delaney, a resident of Crettyard, Co Laois, and mother to a 17-year-old daughter, had been homeless for at least seven years, spending time initially on Thomas Street before relocating to Aungier Street, near a Tesco Express supermarket
The heartfelt tribute took place near the spot where Ms. Delaney's lifeless body was discovered on Sunday morning. Floral arrangements and candles adorned the makeshift memorial, and a crowd assembled on Monday evening to commemorate her life. Jackie Feeney, who had developed a connection with Ms. Delaney during her time on Thomas Street, shared memories of their late-night chats and coffee sessions. Ms. Feeney recounted the challenges that weighed on Ms. Delaney, including the loss of two close relatives in a car crash.
Despite attempts to offer refuge, Ms. Delaney chose to continue her life on the streets. As the vigil unfolded, attendees held red and pink balloons, releasing them in unison to the strains of her favorite song, "Crazy World" by Aslan. Chris O'Reilly, organizer of the Liberty Soup Run, addressed the gathered crowd, expressing the collective sorrow over Ms. Delaney's fate. He described her as an "amazing person" who, like everyone, had faced rough times.
The community rallied in support, with attendees from various backgrounds and locations, emphasizing the widespread impact of Ms. Delaney's presence. As traffic briefly halted on the street, Mr. O'Reilly acknowledged Ann's love for Liverpool soccer club, symbolized by the many red balloons held by mourners. He extended an appeal for attendance at her funeral to honor and show respect to both Ms. Delaney and her grieving family.
An attendee from Rathgar, originally from Co Mayo, shared that she chatted with Ms. Delaney every Saturday before mass at Whitefriar's Street Church. She remembered Ms. Delaney as a "lovely person" and emphasized that her story could belong to anyone. Ms. Delaney's remains have been taken to the city morgue, and funeral arrangements are pending.
A family notice on rip.ie announced her passing, underscoring the profound loss experienced by her daughter, mother, siblings, extended family, and a wide circle of friends. Funeral details are expected to be announced in the coming days, inviting further expressions of sympathy and support.
