In a bold assertion, Mary Lou McDonald, the president of Sinn Féin, has declared that a referendum on the unification of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland will take place within the next six years.

Speaking to Sky News after the restoration of the Northern Ireland executive, where her party has become the largest caucus in Belfast for the first time since the Good Friday Agreement, McDonald outlined her vision for the future. Expressing confidence in the reunification cause.

McDonald stated, "What I firmly believe is - in this decade - we will have those referendums, and it's my job and the job of people like me who believe in reunification to convince, to win hearts and minds and to convince people of that opportunity."

Under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement, there is a pathway for a reunification poll to be held in Northern Ireland if it appears likely that a majority would express a wish for it.

The legislation specifies that the Northern Ireland Secretary will order a vote in such circumstances. However, the mechanism for demonstrating the majority's wish is less clear.

Addressing questions about the timeline, McDonald affirmed that she meant before 2030. While acknowledging the historic significance of the reunification process, she clarified that it was not an imminent development.

McDonald emphasized the need for the Irish government in Dublin to lead and structure the ongoing conversation about reunification, making it inclusive and considering diverse perspectives.

She urged an open dialogue, welcoming voices even from those who may not initially favor reunification.

Speaking about the collective Irish identity, McDonald stated, "Nevertheless, we all live together, that's never going to change. We share Ireland. We love Ireland, and we want what's best for our children, for our grandchildren. I think that's the strongest, most powerful common ground that we all share."

The prediction sets the stage for a dynamic and potentially transformative period in the complex relationship between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
