During a poignant funeral mass at St Mel’s Cathedral in Longford, Sarah McNally, a 41-year-old Irish woman tragically killed in New York City, was fondly remembered as a "shining light" extinguished in a senseless act of violence.

Originally hailing from Co Longford, McNally had spent several years living in the United States before her life was cut short on 30 March when she was fatally stabbed at the Ceili House Bar in Maspeth, Queens, where she worked.

Fr Michael McGrath, delivering the eulogy, captured the profound impact of McNally's untimely death, stating, "Sarah’s death has stopped us in our tracks. It has caused darkness to ascend, especially on her family." He described her as a beloved figure with a vibrant spirit, cherished by a wide circle of friends both in Longford and across the Atlantic.

Reflecting on her adventurous and generous nature, Fr McGrath emphasized the shock and disbelief felt by those who knew her, mourning the loss of her infectious laughter and zest for life. Despite the overwhelming grief, he highlighted the enduring legacy of joy and warmth McNally left behind, underscoring that the darkness of her passing could never overshadow the brightness of her memory.

As the only child of her parents Dorrie and Des, McNally's funeral paid tribute not only to her immediate family but also to her extended relatives and friends. A touching display of her photograph atop her wicker coffin adorned with flowers served as a poignant reminder of her vibrant presence.

During the communion procession, a rendition of "Sarah" by Thin Lizzy echoed through the cathedral, honoring McNally's memory with a poignant musical tribute.

The somber ceremony contrasted with the recent development in the investigation, as last week, Marcin Pieciak, 36, was arrested by New York police in connection with McNally's murder.

Pieciak, residing in Queens, was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon, marking a significant step toward justice for McNally and her grieving loved ones.

As the community mourns the loss of Sarah McNally, her funeral serves as a solemn reminder of the enduring impact of her vibrant spirit and the collective determination to seek justice in the wake of tragedy.
