In a significant boost to cross-border transportation infrastructure, a €165 million allocation from the EU's PeacePlus programme is set to revolutionize train travel between Dublin and Belfast. Both Iarnród Éireann and Translink in Northern Ireland have expressed their enthusiasm for the funding, which aims to enhance connectivity and promote prosperity across the island.

The investment will facilitate the acquisition of eight new trains for the Dublin-Belfast route, replacing the existing fleet and enabling an hourly timetable. With sustainability at the forefront, the new trains are expected to reduce journey times to just 1 hour and 55 minutes, a significant improvement from the current duration of around 2 hours and 15 minutes.

The procurement process for the new trains is slated for completion within the next year, paving the way for their operation by 2029. This initiative aligns with the broader objectives of the PeacePlus programme, which seeks to foster peace and prosperity in Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland.

With a total value of approximately €1.14 billion over the next five years, the PeacePlus programme underscores the commitment to enhancing infrastructure and promoting economic growth. The move towards electrification aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, contributing to environmental sustainability and combating climate change.

Transport Minister Eamon Ryan emphasized the significance of the replacement programme, highlighting its potential to significantly improve accessibility between Dublin and Belfast. Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Chris Heaton-Harris echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the positive impact on both regions.

The transformative project has garnered praise from various quarters, with European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira lauding its role in fostering local development and advancing the goal of net-zero carbon emissions. With projections indicating substantial growth in passenger numbers along the Dublin-Belfast route, the investment sets the stage for enhanced connectivity and economic opportunity in the years ahead.
