A harrowing tale of tragedy and justice unfolds as the wife of Jozef Puska, along with two of his brothers, gears up to face trial next year. 

The charges? Failing to disclose crucial information to the authorities investigating the brutal murder of 23-year-old primary school teacher Ashling Murphy.

The heart-wrenching incident took place in Tullamore, Co Offaly, on January 12, 2022, when Murphy, engrossed in a simple afternoon run, fell victim to a vicious attack. 

Jozef Puska, a Slovakian native residing in Lynally Grove, Mucklagh, Co Offaly, was subsequently found guilty of the murder last November, receiving a mandatory life sentence for the heinous crime. 

Although Puska had initially pleaded not guilty to the murder at Cappincur, Tullamore, a unanimous jury's swift verdict found him culpable, concluding the trial in just two hours. 

Now, the legal spotlight shifts to Puska's brothers and wife, as they prepare for trial alongside him. Ms Justice Karen O'Connor has set the stage for April 28, 2025, marking the commencement of a trial that is expected to last up to four weeks. 

The accused trio – Marek Puska, Lubomir Puska, and Lucia Istokova – face charges related to withholding information from gardaí between January 12, 2022, and January 27, 2022, at Tullamore Garda Station. 

Adding further layers to this tragic saga are the charges against Jozefina Grundzova, 33, and Viera Gaziova, 38. Both are accused of impeding the apprehension or prosecution of an individual, deepening the legal complexity surrounding this case. 

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, free legal aid has been granted to all five defendants, emphasizing the significance of a fair trial. Despite this looming legal battle, none of the accused were required to be present in court on this occasion.
