The latest figures on homelessness in Ireland reveal a stark reality, with a record-breaking 13,179 individuals, including 3,991 children, experiencing homelessness. This staggering number marks the highest level ever recorded in the country. Amid this crisis, Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien emphasized the government's commitment to addressing the issue, highlighting a substantial funding allocation of €242 million for homeless services in 2024.

He touted the success of initiatives like the Tenant in Situ scheme in preventing people from entering emergency accommodation and pledged to extend this support into the following year. However, Social Democrats TD Cian O’Callaghan criticized the government's response, highlighting the alarming growth in homelessness figures during O’Brien's tenure

He pointed out a 52% increase in people living in emergency accommodation and a disturbing 50% rise in homeless children since O’Brien assumed office, underscoring the failure to curb this crisis. Notably, Father Peter McVerry, a prominent homelessness activist, forewarned of an even bleaker scenario, predicting a potential surge to 16,000 homeless individuals by the next general election. 

In defense, O’Brien acknowledged the complexity of the issue, citing collaborative efforts between the government, local authorities, and NGOs to address homelessness. He acknowledged the challenge but affirmed the government's prioritization of combating homelessness despite the daunting hurdles.
