The debate comes in the aftermath of the Dublin riots that shocked the nation.

Marc MacSharry, an Independent TD, pulled no punches during a recent Dáil debate, calling out what he described as the prevailing sentiment of “Middle Ireland” towards the country’s immigration policy. This came amidst a wider discussion prompted by a troubling incident on November 23rd—a school stabbing involving children and a caregiver, followed by chaotic riots in Dublin.

Expressing condemnation for both the violent attack and the subsequent rioting, MacSharry stressed the urgent need for policy adjustments in the realms of justice and immigration. While supporting immigration and acknowledging his own experience abroad, he emphasized the importance of aligning policies with the country's capabilities. MacSharry highlighted the discontent among the public regarding Ireland's unique and, in his view, unsustainable immigration approach, particularly in the aftermath of the Ukraine war, which has led to stark disparities in financial support for different refugee groups.

He further criticized the situation where government departments were inadvertently competing for accommodation, inadvertently driving up rent prices by 12%. This, he argued, worsened the existing housing crisis. MacSharry also expressed frustration at being labeled a racist for addressing what he considered a significant issue that needed open discussion. Highlighting the lack of a unified European approach to immigration, he urged for a realistic assessment of Ireland’s efforts compared to other countries, emphasizing the concerns of those in Middle Ireland and calling for a more assertive stance.
